Career and Technical Education

We believe that education opportunity for all students will not be fulfilled without a re-dedication to Career and Technical Education (CTE).

In 2015, the PFT secured an AFT Innovation Fund grant to support and promote CTE in Pittsburgh. The initial grant and successor grants totaling $500,000 helped to revitalize and expand the District’s CTE program. Led by former PFT President Nina Esposito-Visgitis and former PFT Parliamentarian Harold Grant.

Their efforts have assisted with the new energy in the CTE program. The current leadership is determined that past contributions are not squandered.

The focus on standardized testing under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) has not stopped the crisis of dropping out of school even if students don't actually leave. Quality CTE programs are grounded in real-world occupations and career opportunities that will challenge students and prepare them for success in today's economy.
